It is a good Day; Well it is really green here. So much rain. Each week another tropical storm forms about 1000 miles south of here and with that we end up with rain. After three dry summers, this very different. Even now as I write this it is raining again.

But enough of the weather reports. Last week at men’s breakfast some ladies showed up! But they really didn’t want to sit with us. I think the topic material was scary or something. It was all good, they had pre-arranged to meet in the other room, but it sure gave the guys a heart jump!

This week, I was able to get out to San Jose and see for myself some of the homes and damage caused by flooding. With one of the local residents I was able to be introduced to some residents of the area. I saw first hand the piles of ruined furniture and water marks on homes. I was able to give away twenty bags of groceries and tell people that there still is a God who loves them and this was just a token of love. The people need bedding and clothes and while we do not have a facility to store and distribute those items we do have arrangements with other groups and people to distribute bedding and clothes. Donations will be accepted at the church.

Later this week we expect a large amount of rain. And because of your support, SCCC is able to be in this care effort for the long term. The communities will be a long time recovering from their losses. Thank you for your continued support.

Now I want to insert a message from Hannah about an up coming potluck dinner. It is a great opportunity for fellowship and to explore different foods.

Did you know the word “potluck” originated in 1592, describing an unplanned meal — the “luck of the pot?”

We will be having a church potluck Wednesday, September 28th. We hope many of you will be able to attend!

Since it is a luck of the pot type of meal then we need your help in supplying a dish. The church will be providing a type of meat. Possibly shredded chicken, pork or something of the like. If you would like to come and enjoy some good food and fellowship then please sign up after church for the following two Sunday’s. We will ask that if your last name begins with A-G please bring a salad and soda, letters H-M a main or side dish and lastly N-Z a dessert.  The sign-up sheet will be for the dish you plan on bringing and anyone who is willing and available to help with set up and clean up. Looking forward to seeing you all there!  Thank you, Hannah.

With that I will say, hurry home everyone, you are missed!

Sunday, It seemed to be a lesson we all heard before. One of my first Bible studies came from this same text of 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 and the subject of temptation. My focus this Sunday was to grow as a better vessel for service and to maintain that growth to prevent falling back. And we have so many ways to be tempted and to interrupt that growth. So we need some preventive stops.

I suggest H.A.L.T.. We are in danger and our defenses are down when we are hungry, angry, lonely or tired. In these times we are mostly likely to fail and make a wrong decision to yield to our temptations. We become more vulnerable. Being aware of our weaker times may help to prevent that bad decision.

The other is I encouraged community. Some groups like Alcohol Anonymous have people that support one another to resist temptations and thus progress to their goals. Or our group maybe coffee shop friends or your Bible study group, a weekly breakfast group, or your close few friends. We all need community. But not just to live in but to be accountable and support one another. This isn’t just about you having support but maybe there is someone in your sphere of relationships that could use your support?

Also suggested was to stay in humility. A humble person recognizes their vulnerability. They know that they can fall to temptations just like others. Being aware of that they will run when tempted and not stay to play with the temptation. The other type is the over confident or an arrogant person who thinks they will never fail or at least put on the show they have everything mastered. That person will be soon isolated and in silence about their struggles.

In the end of this matter, stay humble, stay in community and H.A.L.T. when tempted.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  Next Sunday, Denver Jantz is bringing the message.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
