No Retaliation

When you think of Jesus Christ, no one had a greater right to seek retaliation than he did.  The Bible tells us, he had at his disposal infinite power to take revenge at any moment in his agony.   “Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53).

But he did not do it.  When every judicial sentiment in the universe cried out “Unjust!” Jesus was silent.  “When he was reviled, he did not revile in return: when he suffered, he did not threaten” (1 Peter 2:23).

Why not?  It was not because the situtation was tolerable.  None of us could possibly have endured such beating.  He didn’t cry out because he had to go through the suffering in order to bring you and I to God.  The whole design was to be a substitute for us.  Someone had to pay for our sin and atone for our unrighteousness.

He bore our sin on the Cross and the Lord inflicted the penalty of our sin upon him.  And the goal of it all: “Greater love has no man than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.”  (John 15:13)  “Christ suffered, the righteous for the unrighteous so that he might bring us to God.” 1Peter 3:18
