Late edition with Smoke in the skies

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; As I write this letter, I am visiting family in Ontario just north of Toronto. We are in Ontario to celebrate my mother’s 89 birthday. The smoke from the fires in Quebec have made the skies gray. (matches my hair!) The air is so gray and smells and the sun can’t be seen. And in comparison, to San Carlos, it is cool.

Family and friends are so important. It is so good to catch up with family without it just being some video file online. Someone asked me recently if we were moving? Where did that question come from? Is that a hint? My reply was that I am tired of saying good-bye to people. Friends are the spice of life. Friends provide such variety to life. We have friends all over far and wide and if you are my friend, and that then is long term in my heart and mind. It is often (very often) that God designs our friendships and it up to us to shape, cherish and shape those friendships.

So I challenge us all to look around and consider your family and friends and choose to cultivate those friendships. Don’t let them slip by. Perhaps God has placed these people in your path to be a blessing, or a provider of lessons to you and for you to them.

With that said there are many opportunities for this to take place. It may be the church potluck dinner, or cookies Sunday on the church veranda, or a dinner at the Yacht Club or possibly just having a few people over to your home for dinner. This season grab that opportunity to develop friendships. And when you get to church, look for that one person you do not know, they may be your next best friend!

Coming up is V.B.S. July 17 to 21. Please contact Pastor Mayra for details. I like the event. Thinking back to my childhood in the previous century, it was those school teachers and others who took time to invest in me that came up later to prove to be a good investment.  Or in other words, they planted seeds that later produce values in me. I bet it was the same with you. So, let us gets those children to VBS.

Sunday, was an introduction to the book of Ecclesiastes. The book is depressing to read. It is a sad look on life as a man reflects on his life. Self evaluation is not a bad idea and we get a look as the author writes something like a journal of his philosophy on life. And it is grim. Vanity of vanities is a common expression that he uses. He is seemingly saying that all we do in life is just a waste of time and it just to satisfy of vain self. But I warn you not to skim read the book.

The book is best read slowly. Look for reoccurring statements. Read it as a book written by a Hebrew man and some of the statements are better understood from the context of his culture. He is also very philosophical.  He really isn’t writing for us but really seems to be talking to a younger secular population, as if trying to answer to their questions.

But read through with some thought and slowly looking for clues and you will see that he is often pointing to God. Not like a preacher, as the book calls him, but more like a father trying to encourage a younger person to remember God and that God is all there is. Without God in view and in direction, all your life is vanity and a waste of your time. However one chapter does address the vanity of religion for self sake and without God is just self serving vanity. Read through slowly and find this study. And look for the underlying message that life without God is vanity.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
