Pastor’s Desk-are you ready

It is a good Day; This last Sunday was Mexico’s Children’s Day. We sure had a lot of kids. They all went home with a Bible lesson and a lot of candy. Some of those kids were dressed up in costume for the day. Others were just plain cute. We love our kids at SCCC.

Coming up next Wednesday May 10 we have a potluck dinner, at 5:30 at the church. Bring a meal to share and a friend. Please bring the meal prepared and ready to serve. The church kitchen gets very busy if you are trying to heat it up, or make the salad etc. Also, if you are able to assist with the setting up or clean up contact Hannah. It is also the day Mexicans celebrate Mother’s Day. Maybe we can find some manner to fit that in?

Then Monday May 15 at six p.m. is Monday Night at the Movie. The movie is “The Case for Christ.” It is a movie about a man’s experience about 40 years ago, who thought he could disprove Jesus Christ as a real person who was the Son of God. I write in the past tense, but we all know he is in the present tense now! Please come join us for these events. Bring a friend. And thanks again to Scott and Kelly for preparing the popcorn and water.

Hey we have baptism coming up. On Sunday May 14 Pablo is being baptized in the Sea of Cortez. He truly loves Jesus and shared his testimony with Mayra and I. We are excited to see him taking this step of faith. If you wish to be baptized contact us as soon as you can. A video of his baptism will be posted later that week on our fb page.

I found my arrow. Some of you may have heard the illustration I used about shooting arrows from a very old crossbow I have. One of the arrows missed the target and I could not find it. I looked in the field behind my house and couldn’t see it. I feared it had deflected off into the neighbour’s yard.

Well I was trimming a cactus that was reaching across my fence into another property and there it was. Buried into the stalk of the cactus. Recovery was prickly. As I said, we can have the right aim and point into the right direction, yet still miss the target. I miss on occasion! Missing can be very bad. Likewise, we can have all the right aims in life but we can miss the target. If your aim is eternal life, there is only one way, Jesus. Living for him is the target.

Sunday, the last in a series on “Faith.” We looked at three stories of people on their faith journey. All can be found in Mark 10. The first is the story of the children coming to Jesus and Jesus receives them. He says the startling words “receive the kingdom of God like a child.” How is that? The children went to Jesus to be with him and went in humility and trust of who he was/is. And from that we can see that is how we should approach Jesus; in trust and humility.

Unlike the next story of the rich man who went to Jesus. He knew what he was looking for. He wanted eternal life. But I propose he was self reliant. He figured he had done all the right things. He probably didn’t really want an answer to his question, but wanted a commendation for his excellence. Notice Jesus only suggests to him the commandments about how he should treat other people. He had excelled at that. But Jesus does not mention the commandments about how we relate to God! Why do you think that is? Then Jesus tells him to sell everything and give it to the poor. But this man was self-reliant. He had figure how he should get to heaven and eternal life based upon his work. And if he sold everything, then he would not be self sufficient nor self reliant. He could not have that. I suggest his aim was right but he missed the mark.

The last is the story about the blind man Bart. He was poor and broken and not even worthy to enter the Temple. He was going to be full of faith and be God reliant for his salvation and healing.  He abandoned everything to get to Jesus. And he was rewarded.

To finish my challenge was that we need to be fully persuaded that God can. Full of faith in him. But this only happens by experience and rising to the challenge. Where do you need faith most and for? I challenge you to go to Jesus in faith and meet the challenge. Can you have more faith in Jesus.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  Next Sunday, Mark K will bring the Bible message.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
