Backpacks & forges

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day;  When last did I say I was excited about this coming year? Probably only a few weeks ago. But I am looking forward to our coming year! And so should you. There will be updates for the church itself, some new programs and we are blessed with new people that are diving into SCCC.

About twelve days ago I injured my left hand. Surgery went well, but I sure am grumpy. Thanks for praying. Last year I had some forging classes at my home and it went well. This year I am planning three backyard classes. So what you say? Well this year I have more help. That is what I mean by people jumping into the life of the church. I needed help to do this and a couple of guys stepped up.

We have a new program starting next month. The newcomers potluck dinner. It is designed to help our new comers to get more acquainted with who we at SCCC are. It will be a presentation about our goals and vision as well as a who is who of the staff and leadership. Watch for some announcements about that.

Several weeks ago, I asked your opinion and got some responses. Based on that and asking other pastors, the leadership here at SCCC have decided to started putting our worship services up on YouTube. If you go to YouTube, you will find us, but so far these are past services. We need at least fifty subscribers to be “live” on our own channel. Here is the link.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ft9yXcPYmvQ

The advantage to this is you can get closed captions in the language of your choice. Which is a benefit to reaching out to Spanish speakers. It also gives us more advertising opportunities. People when looking for a church, will check websites, goggle etc. The presence you have on FB or YouTube gives them an opportunity to see you before they step in. Think of it this way, when last did you use the Yellow Pages of buy a newspaper to research for a company, business or church?

Good news Randy M is on the book for surgery, January 3 and then a later they can continue for follow ups with a specialist n MX. They are very thankful for all your prayers.

Please continue to pray for Ethel D, to pray for her healing. Pray for Jamie, Kathy S.’s son had a stroke last Sunday morning, and is in hospital in Tucson.

Sadly, I tell you that Barbara Montoya passed away last week in Tucson. She was a long time member of SCCC. Her husband Alfred had passed away last July. From my conversations with them I believe they are both together with the Lord.

Coming Up:

Women’s Christmas event on Dec. 9 from 3 to 5. It is an Afternoon Christmas Tea with an inspirational message of the Christmas Story, called “Prepare Him Room”

Packing the backpacks for the children. We have been announcing this at church. Please bring school supplies and small toys to the church and leave them on the kitchen counter. The “packing” day is December 11, starting in the morning at 9. Usually well organized and with enough help, it goes smooth and is a bit fun.

“Forging in the Sun” a time of fellowship and learning at Pastor Chuck’s home, of how to use a forge like a blacksmith. Everything will be supplied, just bring some lunch to share on the BBQ. More information to come.

Sunday, was the first Sunday of Advent. To take a different look at this season, we went to the book of Isaiah. Shall we call it the Gospel of Isaiah? This book presents the good news about the coming Messiah which the New Testament writers saw as fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

We looked at the prophesy of Isaiah 7:14, but for background we started at verse 10. The chapter its self gives us a clearer picture, but the short version is in the few preceding verses. War was brewing amongst Judah, Israel, Assyria and Syria. Alliances were being made and the king of Judah was without faith. Isaiah speaks for the Lord to tell King Ahaz to trust God and not the might of armies. Ahaz makes a really poor excuse but Isaiah takes no part of it.

He predicts that a son will be born who before he could speak his parent’s names or know right from wrong, the fears that Ahaz would come to nothing (7:16). And a reading of chapter eight shows the word of Isaiah to be true and fulfilled. From that text we looked at some ‘guidelines’ to check prophesy as true and just how to read prophesy. For length of text and time here, I won’t bring that to this page.

I suggest that the Old Testament is the mirror image of Christin the New Testament. With that we can easily see that the apostles saw the words of the prophets true in Jesus Christ, and that takes us to Matthew 1:21 – 25.  The Christmas story as we know so well is there is the Old Testament. We just need to look.

The challenge then is to know God is with us, Immanuel, and to read the Bible to see Jesus.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
