Pastor’s Desk-Is it warmer yet?

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; What can we say? The weather keeps saying it is going to get warmer, yet not by much. People are heading north to be with family for Easter weekend. For me it is a sad time as I see those people leave. The church schedule changes too. We are finished with board meeting and Grief Share finished too. The mid week Bible study is finished for the summer. It is sure a sign of changing seasons. It is a season to slow down and take some vacation trips. A time to read and study to just learn, and explore.

Recently we had an opportunity to visit with Dan Reinhardt of Crest Leadership Academy. I got out for coffee and lunch with him too. Such a wise man. We had some good discussions. One such question was, what top two ideas would make the difference for SCCC to move into it’s future? Something to reflect on in this time of summer.

Coming up this Sunday April 2 is Benevolence Sunday collection. There is an opportunity for you to donate those pesos to help keep this benefit continuing.

The next weekend is Easter. Yes we will have a Good Friday service at 9 a.m. and also Sunday at 9 a.m. Easter Sunday the 9th  which is also the 2nd Sunday of the month is also a time of fellowship with cookies and coffee after the service on the veranda. Something to remember and enjoy.

This week, the Fish Fry was on Thursday 23. All the money went to the Benevolence Fund. This was a great evening of fellowship. We raised over $1500 American. That will be such a benefit to helping the needy as we go into this summer season. And it was fun. We had a lot of guests. I took the chance to give a tour of our building to about ten people who had not been in to the church before.

Monday Night at the Movies is next on April 17, “Risen” released in 2016 with Joseph Fiennes. Movie Night has been very popular as a fellowship event. The intermission with old style animated cartoons and free popcorn has been fun too.

Semana Santa is coming up. This year the Easter weekend is April 7-9. We may have two stations in operation. One at the round about and another at the San Francisco beach. Just a consideration at this time. We plan to take our youth group out again to give away bottled water and an invitation to the church. Last year we placed those invitations inside a book, “Historias de la Vida Real” and offered it to people on the street in that manner. Last year we gave away 1512 books and invitations to the church.

This year as we plan for the event we have only 1200 books and would really like to have more Spanish gospel material that will engage people as they read. We will also match that with bottles of water and invitations to the church. If you have something like that as a book or new Bible please contact us at the church. It is a great effect way to share when teenagers approach a person with water and a smile!

Sunday we explored what Paul meant by ‘filled in the Spirit.’ It comes up often in his writings. We looked at four mentions in Ephesians. Being filled in the Spirit means being complete. It is not always going to be demonstrated in our worship on Sunday, but maybe and must be through the week. Being filled in the Spirit is about maturity. And being mature means I will be complete and mature to the knowledge of Christ and able to demonstrate this at any time. My gifts that come with the Spirit are not for me alone but to be a blessing to the church to help it grow. As a mature person I will push others into maturity with equipping them in gifts and helping them to grow too.

Being filled in the Spirit must must (not a typo) demonstrate love. If God is love and his motivation is love, then I as a mature believer must demonstrate love too.

However this is a world of distractions and pollutants. We are to be filled, yet too often other ‘things’ creep in and we are no longer filled but polluted with ‘things’ of the world. We must be ever mind full of what we allow in. I used the illustration of Noah and the ark. When the floods came, they left the windows and doors shut. Or driving a RV in the rain, we may live in it, but when the rains come and we are travelling down the road, we leave the outside world of wind and rain out. We close the windows and doors. In this world to stay filled in the Spirit we must guard what we allow in. Keep filling up in the Lord to continue to operate in love and be mature in Christ.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
