Pastor’s Desk-Risen to faith

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; And now they are gone. I have this time where I like this season and I don’t like this season. The weather is best and no more board meetings. Mostly I am sad because so many people slip away to the north. I still think north is equal to cold. Now so many are gone until next year. The part that worries me is, will they be able to return? If that is you, reader, go to your calendar and put down the date of your return. Then let me know. Call it, comforting of the pastor!

We have an excellent summer coming up. Monthly movie nights. Monthly potluck meals. Vacation Bible School for the children (adults like it too), cookie Sunday on the church veranda, and then there are just the fellowship of bbq’s and house party fellowships that just erupt because someone decides to open their door for a time of fellowship.

Monday Night at the Movies was on April 17, “Risen”  What a great ‘post’ Easter message. Something to think about. It was entertaining and made you think too. One lady I had a long conversation with after the movie has been coming to our church for about a month. The movie made her consider Christ as her lord. She is thinking!  Then the next day I got a message that on her own, by her self she accepted Jesus as her Saviour and Lord. Now isn’t Movie Night got some value!! I am excited. And we just went for the popcorn! Movie Night has been very popular as a fellowship event. The intermission with old style animated cartoons (this month it was Donald Duck) and the free popcorn has been fun too. I am always enjoy seeing who just sits there and watches the silly cartoons of fifty years ago!

Hey, this coming Sunday is Cookie Sunday. Bring cookies, a friend and stay after church for the fellowship.

C.E.C. has a graduation coming up. It will be held at the church on April 28. C.E.C. is giving solid Bible teaching and leadership training to the Mexican men and women. The goal is that they would be better trained for teaching and sharing the gospel within their own culture. I have been to each of these grads over the last few years and while I don’t understand everything said, I think our presence communicates a lot of value to them.

Sunday, we started a series on faith. I could have just stayed in Genesis and studied the father, Abraham. If they studied him you can understand how he was such a man of faith. His faith in God was because he was persuaded that God could do what He said He would do, even when the circumstances said otherwise. Then we looked at Peter and the story in Matthew of Peter walking on the water. Peter was persuaded that if Jesus directed Peter to walk on water, then he could and he did. But then he looked at the circumstances and lost that moment of faith.

Faith is being persuaded even when the circumstances say otherwise. Faith is trusting God, when there is no reason or evidence to trust God. Romans 4:20 says Abraham grew in faith even when the possibility of him being a father was shrinking away. He grew in faith, meaning as the circumstances grew more grim, he grew even more persuaded. That is challenging! And what a challenge we have in these days. Can we grow more persuaded in God as the times seem darker? Can we be more convinced as we see our life circumstances being more reason for fear? Can we be more like Abraham and less like Peter, who starts out good but takes his eyes off the object of faith, Jesus Christ.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  Next Sunday, “Revelation Faith”

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
