Wisdom in a storm

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day;  And we survived a hurricane that came at us like a tropical storm. It was not even as bad as the winds of the haboob a few weeks ago, but with much more rain. The church survived well. No damages, just rain water got in the doors. But around town there was lots of BIG puddles and palm branches all around.

Hey, Monday Night at the Movies was great fun. We should maybe show this same movie again in the winter. If you are reading this now and saw the movie this past Monday, how did it stir and affect you? Send me a note with your thoughts. Now what frustrates me is the social media youtube critics. People seem to be happy to tag onto any fad (?) and have their criticism about it, almost just to get themselves in the spotlight or ‘shirt-tail’ on what is gaining popularity.

Should I make an example? Everyone is an expert now. The recent Jesus Revolution has its own critics that seem that a lot of them found something popular and now they can become popular because they have the ‘true story.’ They remind me of high school dances. Yes, you need some explanation! At a high school dance (back about 1970!) it was the not so pretty girls that were always on the close circle of the most popular girls. They were hoping that us guys would notice them, if we were refused a dance by the prettiest girl. Sorry if the illustration offends you, it is an observation from the boy’s side of the room.

Our sympathies to the families of Linda Abbate. Dan passed away this summer at his home. Also for Barbra Montoya, her husband Alfred passed away at the age of 97. Please pray for them.

Back to better thoughts. All the staff and worship team are back at SCCC. It felt very quite here for a bit this summer. I was often walking around singing, “All by myself.” And teasing I may set up a target range in the hallway! But of course, I did not. Now with all back, we can press ahead with preparing for the fall and winter and some exciting changes at SCCC. Brace yourself, it is going to be a good or even great year.

Out of curiosity I am writing a bit in my spare time, a history of SCCC. Mostly for my own interest but I may share it or file it for future generations. If you are a history buff and have some interest, I invite your memories and stories. I have some interview appointments set up to chat with some of those who have been here a long while. But feel free to write me  back.

Sunday, well finally attendance was down. I think much of that was due to our lack of sleep! It was a windy stormy night.

We looked at the subject of wisdom. It is mentioned so often in Ecclesiastes, but we really have not looked into the subject soften mentioned. Remembering that we are reading a book from man’s point of view and more philosophical than religious. It is like reading a person’s journal as the wrestle through some of the questions of their life. We often read the back and forth debate the author seems to have with himself about the value of wisdom. Chapter 2:16 for example seems to say wat is the value of wisdom?

Solomon, the author, is credited as the wises man ever. And how did that happen and then he debates within himself about the value of wisdom. For the answer to that we need to looked at 1 Kings 3:3-28. The story there has an introduction, then a dialogue between God and Solomon, then an application of that in his life. The central key to that story is 3:11-12. Solomon asking for wisdom and discernment and God gives him that and more.

Ecclesiastes 9:16 says, “Wisdom is better than strength.” That was a lesson he learned from experience and application.  God granted him wisdom, then in application Solomon became the wisest and riches man of his time and all before him. Solomon received that from God. And look back to 1 Kings 3:7 “Now, O Lord my God, you have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.”  Have you ever felt like that? Stuck upon a situation where you just wish you had more discernment and knowledge about what to do? Yes, but what you are asking for is wisdom to make the correct application of the knowledge of the facts.

And that wisdom comes from God. While in my message Sunday I quoted from other verses in the Bible about this, I will leave you with this, James 1:5 “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

And my challenge, do you desire riches from God or wisdom, how would you respond, if he made you that offer?

Next Sunday, I will continue with Ecclesiastes. “Chapter 12”

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
