A Special announcement.

It is a good Day; it is May. And today May 1, is “Labor Day” here in Mexico.  Here at SCCC our summer schedule has started. Cookie Sunday is now the fourth Sunday of each month. Pastor Mayra has Vacation Bible School dates in place. The kitchen will be finished at the end of the month and then we will have our first potluck dinner in June. With the kitchen rebuilt, we may be able to continue through the winter too. It will be much easier for people to maneuver in that more spacious room. Different staff will be taking some travel and vacation time, and the church will get a refreshment of guest teachers. With that and not because of that, some of our congregation also travel. Be careful, I want to see you all back here at SCCC.

This Sunday we celebrate the Lord’s Table and fittingly as He is benevolent to us, let us remember to be benevolent to our community. The Benevolence offering box will be available. Please bring an extra offering.

We are trying a new manner of announcements. Announcements of weekly events and upcoming special events are on the Sunday bulletin page you can pick up when you come to service, also on the website page, here on the Pastor’s Desk letter near the bottom, on the screen before service and a short version is given during the offertory and prayer time. If there is some announcement you missed, well we are trying on this end to keep you up to date on what is going on.

And while we think of the summer schedule as a time of downsizing of activities, don’t be misled! I have four couples who have been expressing their intent to make this town and this church their full-time home. This tells me that we are a year-round church that is international. We are continuing to make efforts to keep that vision of being an international year-round church.

Sunday, we investigated the closing story of Joshua. He does address his people again and there is also a continuation about Joshua in the beginning of the book of Judges. What we read was Joshua 23:6-8. He gives some instructions to the tribes. They had been in the land for twenty years and are now maintaining the country and settling into a rhythm of life. A couple of questions come to mind. Isn’t that the danger? As they settled into a rhythm, the need to monitor just what that is. It is like a habit once you start that habit or rhythm it is hard to change. They had better start right. Second, does this message of Joshua’s apply to us today?

We unpacked the keys of his message. Be strong in your beliefs and values. Don’t turn aside and get sidetracked from who you are and what you are to do. Do not associate with the pagans here or around you. And do not accept their gods. I find us, as the church in general, guilty of all of these.

Verse 13 was a warning about the consequences of compromise. Compromise with the world always brings suffering. Sadly, as you read on into Judges you find that the people did compromise and in a couple of generations, they had lost a lot of their progress.

The biggest solution is, love God and follow him without reservation. Love of God should keep you faithful.

Blessings, Chuck. This Sunday we will look into the story of Gideon. Especially his qualifications.
