From Pastor’s Desk, ‘things change’

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day, The changing landscape of congregation here at SCCC always amazes me. People come in for a season and out again. For example a few weeks ago Bob Burr was here for a visit with his daughter. He suggested he may move back to S.C. Well, I received an email this week, that he is returning and we could see him any day. Welcome back Bob!

Then it is just getting hot here. And so, people tend to run away to cooler places, of course out of pressing business matters in northern cooler locations. People just slip away. People come and go!

Pastor Mayra is away too. She has gone on a vacation trip to see some family out of state. She has worked hard and added extra work by trying to be prepared for so much she has to do when she returns.  There is the upcoming Vacation Bible School August 3-5 here at the church. And then following that she has a Youth Conference here at the church with three different worship bands and some excellent speakers to challenge the youth who attend. I think I will join in too. I just love the energy and enthusiasm of our youth.

Also we expect a new member in our church. Without permission so I won’t use names other than Jack and his wife are expecting a baby girl any day. Maybe by the time you open this letter there maybe another little girl in our church. I am calling on the ladies in our church to send over some meals for the family and drop in to help! Katie J has volunteered to do some coordinating for this ministry of love.

Men’s breakfast and study is still a good group. We had 12 men out on Thursday morning. We have been following a study produced by Promise Keepers. It is simple, requires no editing, it has pictures (LOL Men seem to like pictures) and is relevant to push us on to being better men. I will wait for comments from the wives to see if that is happening.

Sunday, I preached what was bubbling away in me for a few weeks. The Sunday before I mentioned that there was a message brewing in me. So I leaked out from my heart what I thought God would have me share. The secret of prayer is …. To be thankful. Yes Jesus taught us how to pray as referenced in Matthew 6. And I spoke about a model for prayer using A.C.T.S. as a hint to guide you in prayer.

But so many of us remain immature in prayer. We approach God with our wants.  I did that too for a long time. Then one day I was struck by how good God is to us. And I started to just be thankful. I started to just give thanks and listing all I had to be thankful for. It changed my prayer life. I rarely tell God what I want or need. My central point of prayer is thanks, and intercession. In this I have found more blessings and more to be thankful for. I even consider myself blessed more than I deserve and rich.

The other is my attempt to be constantly in His presence. I have a set time to pray each day. Early in the morning, then again before our evening meal, my wife and I pray together. But otherwise I am just trying to live and move in His presence all the time. Mostly LISTENING. I want to hear Him and never miss a word. I have found over the years if I wasn’t listening, and He speaks, it is no use to say, “Sorry I didn’t hear that. Can you repeat that for me?” At least my experience is, He does not repeat. It is, He spoke and I had better be listening.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
