Jesus or Barabbas?

Reading Matthew 27 this morning I was surprised again of the reminder of how often we choose wrongly in this life.  The context is that Jesus is standing before Pilate accused by the Jews of blasphemy leading to death.  Pilate finds Jesus completely innocent, but the Jews want justice.  Finally, out of desperation to get this matter off his hands, Pilate asks,”Who do you want me to release for you, Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ?”

Well, we know the answer don’t we.  Jesus was delivered up to be crucified for our sin.  I wonder how many times we have chosen exactly the same kind of wrong response and still do?  Hard hearts choose wrong things, but thankfully God renews hardened hearts.

You cannot read the crucifixion story without reading Hebrews 10:19-39.  It is the description of the Curtain being torn in two and God’s invitation to come fully into His presence by the blood of Jesus.  What does that mean?

It means we are invited by God through Christ into a new life, which chooses Jesus over Barabbas.  Jesus Christ came to seek and to save all who are lost.  Barabbas was as lost as we are.  The people of Jesus day chose wrongly – don’t make the same mistake.

Hebrews invites us to: “Draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  Hebrews 10:22-23
