My Strength or God’s Power

There is a wonderful account of Peter, James and John having fished all night and catching nothing – wanting to call it a day and go home to rest.  Jesus comes along and says to Peter, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Peter responds as most of us would, “Master, we have toiled all night and took nothing!  But at your word I will let down the nets.”   The rest of the story is that the catch that day was overwhelming, it nearly sunk the boats and Peter fell down at the Lord’s feet in a trembling, unworthy in spirit.  Peter’s response was: “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

God often asks us to do things in his strength that we have often done before in our own.  A relationship with God is about God living in us and our willingness to walk in that relationship with a listening heart.  “Master….at your word I will let down the nets.”  God, through Christ’ s death and resurrection, has made a divine power available for us to live in and under.  We are unworthy of that as Peter realized.  But will I let Jesus be “Master” in my life?  God’s power changes lives – He wants to change yours.  Peter went from calling him ‘Master” to calling him “Lord.”   “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”   What are you calling Jesus these days?
