Pastor’s Desk

It is a good Day, We had 13 people at the “Going away Party” at my home last Wednesday. We should have had this party a couple of weeks ago. So many people have left and others in the next couple of weeks. For me it is a sad time to see them go.

What still sits heavy on my heart is that each week people head north and I know they will be absent for several months and maybe the circumstances of life will prevent their return. That is never a good thought. I really don’t like the ‘good-bye.’ Can I encourage you to keep in touch?

But still each Sunday we have visitors and guests. God has made so many interesting creations. What wonderful stories people have. This Sunday we had a new family who are making SC their home.

Hey, the balcony is finished. I must say thank you to the many who showed up with vacuum cleaners and brooms to clean up all the remaining dust. Everything got washed or vacuumed. In three hours we were all finished.  The church sure smells fresh and clean today. Now we will wait a couple of weeks to ensure the material is dry enough and then comes the painting of the walls. It is going to look very fresh and bright up there.

What is coming this summer? In June our youth and children’s pastor has a youth event planned and a Vacation Bible School (VBS) for the children who we see each Sunday. With the restrictions last year, we did not have this event and this year we are just having a smaller version.

With a change in seasons is also an opportunity to develop some new volunteers. We would like to train some volunteers for the sound board, to be greeters and as Sunday ushers. If you want to find a manner to serve here at SCCC, please let us know.

Sunday we began the sermon series “Who is the Holy Spirit” We seem to define “IT” by what “IT” does. And in that statement, there are two wrongs. This is not an ‘it’, but is the very spirit of God. We often refer to God as Father so perhaps we should refer to the Holy Spirit in the masculine. The second wrong is to define the identity of anyone by what they do. My thinking is that when they no longer do that ‘work’ does that change who they are?  My problem has been the same as what we do with people, and that is defining the Holy Spirit by his works. I need to know the Holy Spirit beyond what he does and what he has done.

So who is he if there is more than just the works of the Holy Spirit? Part of the problem for myself is what can I say without someone reading between the lines and people wanting to debate the doctrine of Trinity? And I will not do that. So this is what I am prepared to do and encourage others to do the same. Search the Scripture and your own self and experiences for the presence of the Holy Spirit and to know him more. I want to know him more.

My text was from Galatians 4:6 “Abba Father.” This is possible because God has sent forth the spirit of his Son into our hearts, and from that source we know the great intimacy of God as Father. We are not slaves or illegitimate children but now legal children to a father who will grant to us the same rights as his Son.

I want to know this Holy Spirit more. My invitation to you is to search heart and scriptures that we may explore together and know Him more.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  This coming Sunday, we are interrupting our series on “Who is the Holy Spirit” to celebrate the Mothers amongst us. The message is “Lessons from a good Woman.”
