Good Morning to You, This was a different Sunday. On Saturday we were certain that Hurricane Lorena was going to be upon San Carlos Sunday about 9 a.m. The leadership made a decision to cancel worship service out of concern that people may come out of obligation and suffer injury to themselves in their attempt.
But by Saturday evening the hurricane was downgraded to a Tropical Storm. And as it came in it was just a heavy rainstorm. However out on the coast the seas were giving a battering against the seawall. In Guaymas the story was worse as streets flooded and became impassable.
On Sunday morning Lynn and I drove over to the church, not sure what we would encounter. We were relieved to find the church was fine. As the clock moved on people came in. We greeted them at the door with coffee and cookies and some left over donuts, I think Mayra had left in the fridge! No donuts were consumed but the cookies and coffee suffered much. We visited awhile and them moved into the sanctuary and shared. We shared what Scriptures were most formative to our lives, and what wonderful prayers of provision had God answered for us. We talked about a parable that I have been working on.
In Luke 16:19-31 is the parable of The Rich Man & Lazarus. We discussed this and I challenged them with some thoughts and questions of the parable. Why does the rich man have no name and Lazarus does? In all the parables, no one has a name, yet here one character does have a name. Also is this Lazarus somehow a hint of the man Lazarus of John 11? Another thought of question is who is the audience? For that we have to read the previous verses. There we find that a large part of his audience was the Pharisees and other religious leaders. When you read through the parable you see Jesus teaching this parable and it is a direct attack upon those people. He is very forward. So much for the meek and mild image of a Jesus who was just a mystic and dreamer.
Then we talked about can the dead speak to the living and the dead speak to those of other realms? Can spirits bound in Hades converse with us? And what kind of man is this who makes demands of Abraham for the service of Lazarus? How was it that Lazarus deserved heaven, yet the rich man’s reward is Hades?
Well these were questions we examined. Should I give you the answers we came across. Ok, I will. On Tuesday October 8 I will post the summary and of course the audio sermon will be posted October 6. Can you wait?

We are the Hurricane defilers. Jesus calmed the storm! We worship Jesus at SCCC.
This Coming Sunday: During VBS week we had two adults accept Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. And this Sunday they will be baptized. Exciting! Pray for Alphonso and Rosa.
Ladies Mountain Movers: A time when the ladies gather and pray. And wow, can they pray! Some Wednesday mornings at 9 a.m., I can hear them all the way to my office. I am sure mountains are being moved. Look out San Carlos, the ladies are praying.
