Change is in the air

It is a good Day; Finally the weather is changing. It is only hot in the day time! Seasons are changing. And so it is with life cycles of both people and entities like the church. I am so excited for where we could be going this year. So many opportunities to get on with touching San Carlos. People are returning form the north, where temperatures are dropping faster than ours, and we are seeing those familiar faces.

The shock for them I think is driving through town and seeing all those new stores and restaurants and an Oxxo on every corner! Then on Sunday they will come to church and wonder who are all these new people. Well we have been growing. Both in winter visitors to S.C. and in those who just choose to move to MX and made San Carlos their home. All this is having an affect upon our community and SCCC. I think it is time to step into moving along with a growing community.

In a world where higher ethical values are eroded away, it was good to watch the 1983 movie, “Chariots of Fire”. I had seen it years ago yet still found it was such an inspiring movie. The attendance was up and I can’t be sure if it was because more people are back in S.C. or they just wanted to come see the movie. Before the movie event our youth put together a “snack bar” out on the church veranda. They want to raise some extra money for a youth concert that is coming up.

Then again on Saturday Oct 28, at 6 p.m., the youth are sponsoring a movie, “Jesus Revolution” and this copy is in Spanish. We had seen it a couple of months ago, but only in English without Spanish sub titles, but finally our youth pastor found a legal copy in Spanish. Everyone is welcome. And I am sure our Spanish speakers will be inspired. Again, on the veranda, the youth will have a “snack bar” So come join us!

And can I encourage you to pray for the war in the Ukraine and the war in the Middle East to end with peace and more people coming to know the mercy of God and not the horror of war.

Please continue to pray for Randy M and Ethel D for their healing.

Sunday, we started a series on who is Jesus? It is an extensive look through both of the testaments of the Bible. I started with the beginning, which seems like a good start. We examined John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the word ….” It seems so poetic and deep and mystical! And this portion of scripture says that the word was with God in the beginning. So, if this is the understanding the Holy Spirit leads John to, who is the ‘word’?

John was first a Hebrew and would still think like a Hebrew. The Holy Spirit would inspire John to write this gospel and work through John’s understanding. Then we need to look at the Hebrew thought of the ‘word.’ Yes, the gospel was written in Greek, but with a Hebrew perspective.

Both Psalm 33:6 and Genesis 1:3-6 are good examples of the thought. In both of these scriptures the words used, tells us that God spoke and life and creation began. He literally speaks life and creation into existence. By his spoken words the birth take place of all that exists. In my message Sunday we did look at the Hebrew words and those definitions. You can watch on FB or download the audio from the website.

In the New Testament gospel of John, the Greek word is ‘logos.’ To put this simply, logos seems to have life as it is the expressed thoughts of the Father through the Spirit.  To take it a step further without the same depth as the message Sunday, Jesus was and is the expressed thought of God embodied into a human form.

The record of John I continues to tell us that this logos was there in the beginning. And an active partner (I use that word lightly) of the creation event. Jesus was there in the beginning with all creation. He preceded the birth in Nazareth! What? And scripture continues to tell us this story.

Colossians 1:15-17 says the Son is the image of the invisible God. But more than that, everything was created through him! Nothing was created without him. The expressed thought of God! I used to get stuck on verse 15 that says he is the ‘first-born.’ Then I examined it in Greek. To illustrate this, I am my parent’s first-born son with three younger brothers. Yes, it was not easy for them! But in the Greek this word means not that he was the oldest son, but more that Jesus was ‘preeminent’ and to quote James Strong, “the unequivocal Sovereign over all creation.”  And this is why the text continues as it does in verses 16-17.

Jesus is the expressed thought of God and the spoken word of God telling us of his love for his creation.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
