Dinner time

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day;  Have you heard about the upcoming dinner? Well it is a potluck dinner tomorrow August 10 at 5:30 pm at the church. Bring some food, a guest and hey, I’ll step in a few hours early and turn on the AC. I love these times together.

Then a week later on August 17 is a potluck at the pastor’s house. People have asked about our trip to South Africa, so without it being one of those home movie evenings, we are just going to let the pictures play over and over on the screen at the house and people can look as they want or not! Again bring some food to share and let’s have a good dinner together. If you want to use the BBQ, it is available. There will be plenty of outdoor shade on the veranda and AC inside the house!

We really get tied into our technology. Two weeks without wifi or phone service at the church was like camping in the 20th century. So much equipment is set up to function on wifi. Even the printer wouldn’t work! I had to use a cable! Can you imagine, it was like having a rotary phone with a cord! But it is all fixed again. If you dropped off from picking up our worship service on FB, please return. And send in your comments and prayer concerns.

If you are not in town, you are missing our summer of heat, rain and green hills. Please hurry back!

Sunday, The message was that life is not fair! So true, but somehow as believers we think that should all be changed. We looked at Ecclesiastes 7:15 “In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: the righteous perishing in their righteousness, and the wicked living long in their wickedness.”  Now look at that. It does not say that the wicked live longer, but just that they live long in their wickedness. Which is sad. And it does say that the righteous live in their righteousness. Which is good. Regardless of how long you would live, living in righteousness is a good way to live.

Then the scripture continues verses 16 to 22 giving us something similar to proverbs about how to live life in a wise manner. The twist to the tone of this passage changes in verse 23 and following. He realizes he has never found the wisdom that he thought he needed. He determined to be wise. He believes he failed. Perhaps to search out and understand the crazy world around us, then his wisdom can be enriched. No that fails too.

The book we read’ is often called the Preacher, but most properly is called the Searcher. For the writer is searching under God’s sun to understand and search out truth and wisdom. He knows that without God, it is vain and foolish. But he searches to know more.

We find a chapter break, which is not in the original text. 8:1 “Who is like the wise? Who knows the explanation of things? A person’s wisdom brightens their face and changes its hard appearance.” I think that this could be a conclusion to the previous verses. And the verse is a challenge. Remember that the beginning of the matter it seems like wisdom is no better than folly, but wisdom is stronger and gives you a better life! This verse says that you can tell who lives in wisdom by their face. The wise ones seem to have a better and brighter face or countenance.

When you look in the mirror, never mind that bald spot and that mole, look and see, does your face mirror wisdom? Or stronger said in other words, does your life mirror the presence of God in your life? I think we have a responsibility to shine the presence of our God.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
