Pastor’s Desk-fish and an ark

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; Has the exodus begun already? Sad time of year as the snow birds leave us again. But it has been fun and will continue much the same in the months to come, just smaller numbers and less friends. We will continue with movie night and cookie Sunday and potluck meals each month. Different ones will be sharing the Word from the pulpit this summer.

This week, Fish Fry on Thursday 23 at 6 p.m. Invite a neighbour. People have asked me about tickets. No tickets. There will be an opportunity for a donation for the dinner. All the money goes to the Benevolence Fund. This will be a great evening of fellowship. We are looking for donations of fish. Contact us or drop by the church office by Wednesday.

Monday Night at the Movies this week was “David and Goliath.” A classic, released in 1960, with Orson Welles. Attendance was low. Was it a lack of interest in an old classic? My wife and I prefer the old movies. The story line and actor couldn’t rely on ‘special effects’ etc to carry them through.  Or perhaps we needed to show a preview? Or just that many people have left town? But I did meet a new couple that were first time visitors to our church and asked bout Sunday service. So, success. We had new people and those that came saw how Hollywood can really mess up a good enough story with their own version. Though it was not bad, just altered.

Then April 17, “Risen” released in 2016 with Joseph Fiennes. Movie Night has been very popular as a fellowship event. The intermission with old style animated cartoons and free popcorn has been fun too.

Semana Santa is coming up. This year the Easter weekend is April 7-9. We may have two stations in operation. One at the round about and another at the San Francisco beach. Just a consideration at this time. We plan to take our youth group out again to give away bottled water and an invitation to the church. Last year we placed those invitations inside a book, “Historias de la Vida Real” and offered it to people on the street in that manner. Last year we gave away 1512 books and invitations to the church.

This year as we plan for the event we have only 1200 books and would really like to have more Spanish gospel material that will engage people as they read. We will also match that with bottles of water and invitations to the church. If you have something like that as a book or new Bible please contact us at the church. It is a great effect way to share when teenagers approach a person with water and a smile!

Here I want to thank Don G for the new sign and all the little projects he has taken up to do for maintence of the building. Stephen M for his team working on the church yard and parking lots. Did you know after movie night the popcorn machine is really greasy? Dave C comes in and takes it apart and washes it until it looks new. I did that once. It is not a small task. Thanks Dave. We have a library up in the church balcony and Anna S comes in early every Sunday and tends to it. Sonia H readies herself every Sunday with her camera and paper to record new names and faces for the photo directory. And these are just some. So many people are busy tending to the little bits of the church, some on committees and some just serving. Awesome contributors to the work of SCCC. Thank you.

Sunday. We examined a term often used by Paul in his letters, “in Christ.” An awkward term to us. We never speak like that now and so it just reads without any non biblical reference for us to grasp.

In this short letter to the church in Ephesus it is used 16 times. What the purpose is for is to describe our position with Christ. Each time it is telling us where and how to position ourselves with the Christ in all our matters.

The short story about the message Sunday was an illustration of when we use to travel in a motorhome. Driving down the highway or parked at a rest stop, we could do most anything we could in a regular home. When rolling down the highway, my wife may get up and make coffee and a sandwich. Or she may go lay down on the couch and rest. As long as we kept the windows and doors closed we were fairly safe in the motorhome.

Better yet think of the story of Noah and the ark. It is in Genesis is 6 – 8. Noah and his family were safe in the ark from the floods. They lived there safe from harm as long as they stayed in the ark. The ark was an illustration of safety in Christ. In Christ as in the ark, we live our lives focused on Him.

For the rest of the story, you can follow us on the website and hear the audio or watch the entire service or part of it on our facebook page.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  Next Sunday, “Filled in the Spirit”

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
