Haboob and Rain

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; The recent storm is called a haboob. There are still many homes here without power. The church has power but no wifi. It is with regrets we were unable to record or transmit this last Sunday service. We are told it is a problem outside of the building and it is being repaired. Somethings are just not controllable.

V.B.S. was July 17 to 21. We had about thirty children. Last Thursday night we had a dust storm and then rain. Records of winds up to 62 mph or 102 kph were recorded. So a lot of us loss electric power at our homes. We wondered how many children would not return on the last day, Friday?  There were still 26 children.

I watched our volunteers and staff. What an excellent job of teaching and playing.  The volunteers were super. You should have seen the (healthy) snack meals made up for them. I only tried one. Too good! Some of our senior men sat around as ‘security’ but the children were well behaved. As they were released to their parents to be picked up, these older gentlemen stood like guard dogs watching over their family to be sure they were safe and they got into their cars.

This church continues to impress me.

“Church” has always been so important to me. When I turned the corner towards Jesus and walked away from my former life, it was the church I ran to. I have been a church attender, pastor and also I was a district director overseeing nine churches. Not always pretty and clean. Sometimes painful and messy. My experience has not always been good, but like family Christmas dinner, we all sit down at that Christmas dinner and feast with one another, even if we had ‘fights’ through the year. Even when I was not a pastor, it was very rare for me not to be in church. I love the church. I love the people.

The Sunday fun activities of the community, (should I name a few, or does that get to pointed) would wait until after church. For me, motorcycle races and bike shows could continue, without my presence. If the fun activity would be scheduled at the same time as worship service, then that activity would have to continue without me. I went to church. It was my priority.

Sundays I look about and when people were not in church, I would assume they were ill. But in this culture of the 21st century, we now have to ‘compete’ with the circus in town or is there a new flavour of ice cream. I guess we need a light show, ice fog, flashing lights, big worship band and the worship leader needs tighter jeans and should wear a hat, and free popcorn during worship service. Coffee bar as you come in too.

Comments? Come talk to me, I am easy to find on Sunday morning. I will be worshipping Jesus and fellowshipping at the church. Then later out for brunch. I love Sunday and the church.

Sunday, I spoke from Ecclesiastes 3:14-15 about the gift of God. The structure of the book is supremely important. Hebrew poetry will often say something and then say it again just using different words. Last week we looked at how that was done in 3:1-8.

Verse 14 says “everything God does lasts forever.” Then goes on to say, there is nothing to add, nothing to take away, and that it is this way forever. Then verse 15 says something very similar. “Whatever is has been.” And it will be and it has been. Both of these verses focus on God is in eternity and who he is, in his work. It is about where is God?

But I ask, “where are you?” Too many of us fit into this book. We operate out of the vanity of who we think we are. Shakespeare said, “All the world is a stage…” and most of us think we are the center piece. If everyone would just do their part correctly it would all be better. Why can’t people do as I direct them? Do you know someone like that?

Too often we think we and this time is more important than any other person or period of time. Then we get all worked up, and miss the beauty of rest and the creation around us. Sometimes we just take ourselves too seriously!

My personal complaint about social media is we are creating a generation of narcissistic people who are more eager to promote themselves than another. Who do we think we are? Hit that ‘like’ button or comment below!

Again I see in this book the advise, eat, drink, enjoy your work, it is the gift of God. That wording is similar in 2:24, 3:13, and 5:18. In the center of it all is God who gives us the reward of life. Live your life in simple means and do what you can for one another.

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
