Pastor’s Desk – memories

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; We may wonder if our ministry to others carries value? We don’t always see results. It was good to have Victor and his family at church Sunday. They came with one of their three babies. Recently she had surgery and Victor had to stay home to help with the children and care for her. The surgery went well and he is looking to get back to work. They came to say thank you for helping them with the medical expenses for her surgery. Those expenses were covered by our church Benevolence Fund.

Another family you don’t see often is Ron and Anna. They have four children. They oldest two are at church most every Sunday. You see them come up to the front of the church when we send them off to Children’s Church. Anna had another baby girl several days ago. It was a complicated birth and so was difficult. Ron is home helping to care for her and take care of the other four children plus the newborn! If you could help with low salt freezer meals for the family, please drop them off at the church during office hours and Pastor Mayra will deliver the meals.

Benevolence Fund Raiser Bazaar Feb 4 Saturday on the church veranda went very well and may become an annual event. We sure enjoyed the baked goods. It carried right into Sunday with cupcakes on the veranda after service. All proceeds went to support our benevolence fund ministry. It was a good event and we recognize the hard work of these organizers.

Just the same, cookie Sunday is this week. As I said last week, if you don’t bring cookies it just becomes coffee Sunday. But I think the grand purpose of it all is the visiting on the church veranda and getting to meet the newer people.

Our annual meeting is coming up. Not just a business meeting, but also a time to hear reports such as the story of Victor and his family and the affect we have on the greater community of San Carlos. It has been an excellent year. A few changes and a few challenges too, but we are ahead! As you mat be preparing for this meeting, think on the stories and the good memories we have made together a church family and friends.

Sunday we considered the body as a temple of Christ! It was one of those eye opener verses when as a younger man I read that verse. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 really made me think. I dropped some of my habits shortly after. To think that I could be sinning by my treatment of my body was a new thought and that God would choose me to be his abode was humbling.

But consider that these verses are addressing two matters. Yes my body, and I should care for it as a temple that Christ would use and dwell in. It further says in chapter 6:19-20 that the Holy Spirit dwells in me and my body is not my own but his. It tells us that God bought my body at a price. The price was the sacrifice of his son on the cross. When I accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord, the lordship of myself becomes that; my body is his now.

The other matter is that the church is his too. And more than just the building for it is just a building, but we are the church. We the believers who gather to worship are the body of Christ. The community around us looks to us as the representatives of God. Some people come to accept Jesus Christ as their saviour because of the actions of the church, but some also lose faith because of the actions of the body of believers.

The writer of the letter was addressing the city church in Corinth that had a lot of trouble. Divisions within and groups fighting with one another. The fighting one another had no value. For an illustration, it does no benefit when one part of my body fights with another part of my body. It just makes me sick and perhaps needs the attention of a doctor! To attack the church was and is to attack the body of Christ.

While I addressed these two parts and views of this scripture, the biggest revelation to me was that these pounds of flesh that I carry are my responsibility to care for. To remember that this is the temple of his Holy Spirit.

I am blessed to pastor SCCC and that we have such diversity and such unity. SCCC is a great body of Christ.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  Next Sunday, “The Church as a Body part 2”

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
