So much coming up

It is a good Day; The heat and humidity has arrived. I am so surprised to still see people in the balcony at church. It sure was good to be home at SCCC on Sunday. We really missed our home and this church.

We continue to experiment to provide better worship services. We are doing small changes that most people won’t notice but we want to provide the best experience and opportunity for worship. Some times these changes work and sometimes it is best to try a different approach.

Many months ago, I asked the children to the front before we dismissed then to Children’s Church. It was in my thinking it was a one-time event to show attenders how many children we have at SCCC. But people responded so well that we are continuing to do this. However, it can be risky! This week a little girl came down to the front to show me her gold tooth. I was tempted to show her mine, but maybe not just now and there. Then the next child wants to show me her peril white teeth! You just never know where it is going to go! Did you see the Sunday when the seven-year-old girl interrupted me to answer her cell phone and speak to her father to assure him she was at church and all was well! What did she drive herself there!? We will continue to take risks to provide a better opportunity for worship.

I have a question, please reply. A number of people attend church in actual person! Yes really, some do! Then some attend (?) through online worship services. I realize my question has a limited amount of receivers but, do you take in a worship service online 1) via Facebook 2) via Youtube 3) via a live stream off a church website. And would you write me back with your answer and perhaps tell me what church and why that church. It is for research on present trends of church attendance.

Potluck Dinner is Tomorrow, Thursday July 13 @ 5:30 p.m. Did you notice the change of date? I understand we will have guests come that have not joined us before. They are English students! So be looking for these who are guests and try to find a new friend.

V.B.S. is almost upon us.  July 17 to 21. It is for children, ages five to eleven. Please contact Pastor Mayra for details.

Also Monday July 17 is Monday Night at the Movies at 6 pm. There is free popcorn. The movie is “Mountain Top.” About a pastor who returns to law practice and uncovers corruption in his small town, just as he is dismissed form his pastorate and his church burns! Come join us and let’s see how the pastor squeezes out of this spot!

Sunday, we looked more at the vanity theme that is so strong and repeated in Ecclesiastes. The writer is believed to be Solomon. He is thinking that much of what he and many of us accomplish in life is just vanity. And trying to find satisfaction is like chasing after the wind.

He seeks wisdom for understanding life. But concludes that knowledge and wisdom just shows you more pain and grief of what is in this world. Then he explores pleasure and does all that he desires and anything he desires (2:10.) But soon decides that was a waste too and did not satisfy him.

Of wisdom, 2:15, “Why then have I been extremely wise?” So, I said to myself, “This too is vanity.” And by verse 17 he proclaims, “I hated life…” And decides that his advice for us is “There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and tell himself that his labor is good. This also I have seen that it is from the hand of God.” 2:24  But wait there is a disclosure of a secret there! See what he says?

He is telling his readers that we should be satisfied in a simple life, of eat, drink, do our allotted work, and realize this is the benevolence of God to us. It is God who gives us life and purpose.
While the book is depressing to read and is like reading the lyrics of a country song, woven into the journal of Solomon is this reoccurring theme that life is from God and purpose of life is only found in God.

In the weeks to come this summer we will continue to explore this book, and I aim to prove the point that purpose is found in the direction of God. Without him, we are living lives of vanity and foolishness.

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.

Next Sunday, I will continue with Ecclesiastes. We will look at the reason Solomon writes this book and see what discoveries are in chapter three at his thoughts on “time.”

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
