Pastor’s Desk – What about you?

Chuck Sheridan Avatar

It is a good Day; On Monday we packed 300 backpacks on the church veranda that are school supplies and a toy for children in the community. We did this at the church but it is the ministry of Casa de Esperanza. So many people came to help and we were finished in 50 minutes. What an awesome team we were! I received a note via text, “What I saw today spoke volumes as to the healthy condition of our church body. Several people have casually said how much they enjoy being part of SCCC.”

And if you did not see, Brenda K of Casa de Esperanza is home and back to work. We are thanking God for her healing.

The December potluck dinner was last Wednesday evening. When we were setting up tables and chairs I was thinking that we would never use all these. But we did. I think we seated 135 people in that room. And there was so much food. Oh we could have fed many more. But we could not have seated more. Some who came were infrequent attenders on Sunday and some had not been to our church. So after as we were finishing I offered a tour of the church facility. Five people joined me in the walk about. Two had been recently coming to church and the other three were new. It was a good chance to visit them alone and just talk with them.

A big thank you to all those who volunteered to host the event in setting up, keeping the desserts under guard (!) and cleaning up. When I returned on Thursday and looked about the church, you would not have known that we had organized chaos the evening before. It was awesome! (I only gained one pound and I can walk that off quickly. What about you?)

If you look further down the calendar we have a lot coming up this next couple of months. (further down)

Howard D is still in the hospital and, and he is stable. They are working at bringing him home to MX. It will be a lot to get him here. He is still needing a lot of care and attention, and he and Susan would rather tend to his needs here in MX. It has been his home and his work for a long time, and the return would be good for his joy. Pray also for Susan to have peace and be strong. She must be under a lot of pressure.

Sunday, Mary, she had plans for her life. Engaged to Joseph and being young would have had dreams just like every bride. Dreams of children and home and being a woman of the community.  Then God interrupted her life with a visit. Everything changed. The angel says to her that she has found to have “favour with God.” Really, this is favour with God? He interrupts her life and changed all her plans!

The conception of the Son of God was not what she had in mind. And all those dreams were altered. Now she was not yet married and had that “baby belly” going on and the community she had hoped would be part of her life would be just shaming her and gossiping about her.

Joseph being a “just” man also had a visitation from God. He took Mary as his wife and “Knew her not.” They followed the direction of the Lord and went to Bethlehem for the census as ordered by the government. There Jesus was born. Life for the both of them was not as planned.

But why did God choose Mary? What was special about her that made her worthy? If you read Luke 1:38, it is her response to the direction the angel gave her. She was obedient.  She gave humble submission to the Lord, and without compromise or argument.

Another clue to her ways was in her song. We call the song, “The Magnificat.” Look at Luke 1:48, she says that God has “been mindful of the humble state of his servant.” He saw in her the VIRTUE of humility. And she acknowledges that God uses the humble, but vv. 51 -52, scatters the proud as he exalts the humble.

So my challenge is which attitude do I want to have before God? Yes he will interrupt my life, and if he is MY Lord then I will submit in humility to his will. How about you? Will you be humble before God and let him interrupt your life?

Blessings, Pastor Chuck.  Next Sunday, “Good Shepherd.”

Right Now Media. Is ready! SCCC has taken a one year membership with Rightnow Media. We are offering this resource to SCCC. I love using Rightnow Media and am very excited that you will be able to have this material resource too! It contains biblical educational videos that have accompanying study books that compliment the video, these can be used for group study or personal study. The studies available are of books of the Bible and also some that are topical. There are resources for adults, men, women, teens and videos teaching for children. I also found ‘conference’ videos that you can take advantage of. In all there are 20,000 videos available. That is a lot of education and inspiration material. The purpose of SCCC in offering this to you is to give you the resources to explore your faith and grow in Christian maturity.

This membership provides for us material in English and Spanish, so it suits our church community very well. Please take advantage of this material and let us know what you think.
